"Carl's Funeral" is the ninth episode in the first season of Schitt's Creek. It is the ninth episode overall.

Plot Summary[]

Bob's brother Carl has just passed away. Johnny and Moira barely know Bob, let alone Carl who they can't remember at all. That's why they're surprised that Bob wants Johnny to be a pall bearer, as Carl apparently admired Johnny. In Johnny's efforts to get out of being a pall bearer, he instead gets roped into providing the eulogy.

Some of Carl's family come to town for the funeral, including Sean and Bree , Carl's ex-stepson - who also happens to be Stevie's cousin - and his wife respectively. As Bree and Sean are staying at the motel, Alexis decides to escape and stay with Ted for the duration. In David's mind, Bree and Sean and their friends are trash, even by Schitt's Creek standards. Later that night, Steve's cousin and wife throw a huge, loud party in their rooms. David gets annoyed by this and tries to get them to lower the volume, however he has no luck and see's Stevie drunk out of her mind.

The next day, during the funeral, it is revealed that Carl died of suicide, though Bob thinks it was a freak accident related to a fan and belt Carl was trying to "untie". Not knowing what to say at the funeral, Johnny transfers thoughts of Carl's death to his own. However, seeing Johnny spiral bring Moira to start singing a song that calms Johnny and shifts the townspeople's attention.

Back at the motel, David walks in on Stevie alone cleaning her cousin's rooms because according to her, she was the cause of much of the damage. As they are cleaning, they both find more alcohol and decide to get wasted. To avoid getting caught by Stevie's cousins who were now arriving to their room, David and Stevie go to the next room... where they begin to make out.
